The Good, The Bad And The Ugly Of It

Sorry for the lack of updating for awhile. In the earlier part of the week, I'd been busy attending classes, sorting out course schedules, applying for classes, buying groceries etc. It's been a big whirlwind of headaches, frustration, fun, trepidation... so I've not had the time to sit down at my laptop.

Of course I've also been kept occupied by M, who has joined me here in Bath. It's lovely having him around - not just because I love his company, but because he also whips up tasty dishes (and then washes up after that), hand-washes my clothes for me, and gives awesome shoulder and leg massages. He's my all-in-one personal butler, and I love him to death for it. Heh heh. :D But no, it's good having him here, and I hate to think of him leaving.

We're slowly making more friends with other exchange students in our wing. There's Nicola, this friendly Italian guy (pity he can't speak or understand too much English), who sort of looks like a curly-haired version of Ricky Martin. Yang has made fast friends with him, and they go out quite a bit. Then there's Shari, a New York chick, our first friend that we made since arriving. There is also Sherazad, an Algerian-French girl who's sort of frosty at first but who has slowly warmed up to us, and Coralie, another French girl who has the same attitude as Sherazad. Oh, and then there's this Canadian Chinese fella called Daniel, who um is kind of odd if you ask me.

Maybe it's the language difference, but we seem to have to repeat everything we say to them at least twice before they understand what we're saying! It's kind of befuddling and a little frustrating sometimes, but oh well I guess we'll get by.

Bath is really turning into frosty autumn quickly, but thankfully the heating in my room is finally up! No more sitting at the computer shivering away literally from head to toe. :) I'm really glad. Oh! And I went to Bristol the other day with Marcus and we brought home a bumper crop of goodies there. Well, he got a poker chip set for a steal as well as a pair of reallyreally happening shoes from Topman (they're pointy, made of canvas, and just ubercool), and I got my puffy windbreaker jacket and a yellow sweater for eight pounds and six pounds respectively. That's like, less than what it would cost even in Singapore! I was really happy, and henceforth I've been less depressed thanks to the added warmth. Eight pounds to buy warmth - a fantastic bargain, I say.

I've been to a few of my classes already, and these are the courses I intend to take (I haven't gotten Brand Communication yet) :
  • English Literature in the 19th Century
  • Contemporary Literature and Film in the British Isles
  • Creating and Starting An Entrepreneurial Venture
  • Brand Communication

My E Lit classes are pretty interesting, we'll be doing classics like Great Expectations and Frankenstein for the 19th century course and a mixture of poetry and film for the contemporary course. But they also have plenty of coursework throughout the semester to keep me busy, so it's not exactly as much fun and games as I thought it would be! We have an individual essay assignment, a timed-exam essay, and an individual presentation as our course work for each lit course. Bah! : I foresee a lot of time spent on these two modules.

Our Entre class is quite interesting too, in that the students who take it all seem like smart-aleck British boys, and the lecturer is really quite a strapping, charismatic and handsome 50something man. Hehe. Oh, and the subject matter itself is alright I suppose. Heh.

My Brand Comm prof is this guy who spent 20 years in strategic planning (advertising), and who has written his own textbook that costs frickin' 45 pounds! I still haven't gotten this class so I'm not sure if I'll buy it yet. This prof sort of reminds me of Simon Cowell though, in the slightly pudgy size and build. But he's not as bad-ass or charismatic, sadly.

I'm crossing my fingers that classes won't be too challenging here. I know we just have to pass a course, but it's a rather odd feeling to aim to just pass a course though, I don't really know how to explain it. I'm also crossing my fingers that I will get to experience everything that I wanted to experience here on exchange. To be pushed out of my comfort zone, but also to be happy and excited and all of those things. I'm quietly hoping things turn out alright. Yeah.

Okay it's time to wake Marc up so we can plan our travels together. But he looks so nice and snug in my bed it's kind of hard to do that. Heh. Oh well. Sayonara friends, I'll update again soon, I promise! Lots of love.
